JENIN, West Bank (AP) _ A grieving Palestinian father's
decision to donate his 12-year-old boy's organs to Jewish
and Arab children has brought an unexpected blessing to his
West Bank town: a new, state-of-the-art cinema.
The cinema opens Thursday in Jenin, a former militant
stronghold, five years after Ismail Khatib's son Ahmed was
shot dead by Israeli soldiers who mistook his toy gun for a
real weapon.
The project was conceived by a German filmmaker while
doing a documentary about the Khatibs' tragedy, entitled
"Heart of Jenin."
Filmmaker Marcus Vetter spotted an abandoned movie house
in the town that had closed in the late 1980s, and decided
to refurbish it.
Germany, the West Bank government and Pink Floyd's Roger
Waters helped finance the cinema.
